COPENHAGEN - DAY ONE

At the Copenhagen airport

Sandra emailed a collection of pictures that she took in Copenhagen so I'm anxious to share some of them with you.  We thought about taking the train from the airport to our hotel, but weren't sure about connections so opted to take a taxi.  I asked the driver how much the fare would be, (as I'd read in advice for tourists) but he got a bit upset with that, said they are honest drivers and would not take us on a longer route, etc.  But he did give us an estimate that it could be up to 300kroner.  It was rush hour and his fare came to just under 300 which was almost $50 Canadian.  However, we thought it was worth it to be delivered right to the door of our downtown hotel instead of struggling with all our luggage and having to drag it to our hotel from the train station a few blocks away.

The hotel had been remodelled since Todd, Kristy, Howard and I had stayed there before Christmas in 2007.  The connoisseur who took care of Howard the day the rest of us walked all over wasn't on duty or may have a different job.  The ones who were there were excellent, gave us advice on  sight seeing and sold us tickets for the city and harbour tour the next day as well as booking a taxi for our return trip to the airport.  Very helpful staff to have!  Here's a look at our hotel:

Traditional Scandinavian beds
a duvet folded in half with a covering over the end of the bed

A cosy window seat
A view from our room on the 13th floor

Interesting decor in the lobby

Relaxin on a swing

A
or in a basket chair

After we had relaxed a bit in our room, we decided to head for Tivoli Gardens.  It was just a few blocks from our hotel so off we went with plans to eat at one of the numerous restaurants there.

Main entrance to Tivoli Gardens

Prices and schedule listed at the gate
I had been to Tivoli on our pre Christmas trip but in summer it was a new experience.  Now it was more like a fair with numerous rides for the adventurous.  That didn't include us!  We were content to leisurely explore the grounds, stopping to admire the beautiful flowers, fountains, unique buildings.  We also enjoyed some of the free entertainment at different venues.  Oh, and we did take time to dine in one of the many restaurants.

One of the many fascinating fountains and buildings
A tasty dish of gelato, two different flavours

A huge weeping tree with gigantic pots and flowers

Enjoying music by "The Nordics"
Another huge pot of beautiful flowers

Beautiful trumpet shaped flowers

Plants trained to grow in fascinating shapes

One last view of beautiful Tivoli Gardens

A good meal before walking back to the Scandic Hotel

Watch for day two in Copenhagen which will cover our city and harbour tour as well as some shopping sites!
