Birthday Weekend

Thanks for this special blessing, Janice!

Turning 70 last Friday was the start of a fun weekend, many greetings on Facebook, phone calls, cards and e-cards, Skype visits and company.  Thank you for sharing this special day with me.

Clare and our nephew Jason spent Thursday night here and took me out for breakfast to Smitty's, a great start to the day.  Then I went up to St. Joe's and had dinner with Howard - roast beef, mashed potatoes and gravy, peas, and a fluffy dessert.  I also visited with Aunt Viola, then went home and had an early supper ready for Laurel and Ashley when they arrived from Milestone.  She had brought a birthday cake so we took that up to St. Joe's and had cake with Howard and Aunt Viola.  Ashley helped blow out the candles.

Ashley likes Howard's puppy!
I made up a board of my birthday pictures as Howard didn't have access to see them on a computer.
Elaine - through the years

On Saturday we went shopping in the morning, then up to see Howard again.  Ashley enjoyed visiting with other residents too.  Pearl Marcotte even had treats for her.  Children really brighten up the day for residents of a care home.

Laurel enjoyed seeing her friend, Chrisie, at work at A & A Jewellery in downtown Estevan.   We also stopped at Pharmasave and I came home with a new purple "lug" bag, thanks to birthday gifts of money.

We spent the evening at home and watched the Alberta Junior Women's curling team defeat Manitoba to become Canadian champions. They will compete at World's in Sweden!  The Alberta skip is a Peterman, granddaughter of Aggie (Fonstad) and Lyle Peterman.  Kirk stayed in their basement suite when he attended college in Olds a few years back.

Today I drove to Torquay for a Ladies Aid annual meeting before church.  Laurel and Ashley came for the 10:30 service and headed home after the congregation's annual meeting and potluck dinner.  I went back to Estevan and enjoyed a concert by Alexander Sevastian, a renowned accordion player, a native of Belarus now a Canadian citizen living in Toronto.  (Thanks, Phyllis and Bob).  After a visit with Howard, I came home and am now working on my Sunday blog!

Kirk's were away this weekend enjoying the warm weather and activities in Phoenix for six days. Jamie was having so much fun she wants to stay for a few more days. I expect they'll be back tomorrow, as planned.  We'll have a family birthday party when Todd comes home for a week the end of March.  Kirk will be 40 on March 23, Todd will be 35 on April 15.  But really, every birthday is special so take time to enjoy and celebrate each one.

Although only two of our "kids" and one grandchild out of seven were able to celebrate with me this weekend, I look forward to a second celebration with all of them next month.  Here's a picture taken last July at our Erickson reunion.  Howard, Todd and Kristy were not able to attend.

Just a note about Howard and my birthdays.  Shortly after we met, we got talking about our birthdays.  Howard's birthday is August 11, the same date as my mother's!  Howard's mother's birthday was February 10, the same as mine!  Don't you think that we were destined to be together?

  1. Hi Mom,
So glad to spend your birthday weekend together. Ashley and I had alot of fun. I enjoyed reading Grandma's letter when you were just a year old! The girls at church must have taught Ashley 'duck duck goose' because she was talking about that when we got home! Looking forward to Todd's visit when we can celebrate again! love Laurel

  2. Yes, I saw the four of them playing that after dinner. I think it was new to Ashley so the boys will have to play it with her now! So glad you could spend the weekend with me!
