MIRACLE AT MILESTONE

Yes, there are guardian angels!

On Friday morning I was tying a quilt that I took home from our quilting day at Trinity when the phone rang.  It was Laurel's husband, Greg.  He began the conversation with "Laurel's okay, but" ....... and proceeded to tell me that Laurel had driven uptown to take part in a Farmer's bonspiel at the curling rink and had collided with the train!!!   Not many people walk away from an encounter with a train, but when the EMT's came to the scene she was standing up waiting to be helped out a window that was no longer there in a pickup that was a write off.  She had a tiny cut on one hand that needed a bandaid and her left upper arm was sore.  The ambulance attendants offered to take her to the hospital in Regina but her vital signs were normal, and she told them "I'm okay" and was soon on the way home with Greg, after stopping at the police station to fill out a report on the accident. ( She did go to Regina the next morning with Greg to see their family doctor.  He checked her over, said that the muscles in her left arm were bruised but no broken bones.  She got some muscle relaxants, bought a heating pad and is recovering after her life was spared in a very scary encounter that could have ended tragically, but for the grace of God and the seatbelt that she always buckles up.  Seatbelts do save lives!

Vehicle "written off".   Driver "I'm okay!"

I was in shock for awhile, made a few phone calls and knew that I had to head for Milestone in the afternoon.  I left here after two, stopped in Torquay for the mail and got to Greg and Laurel's about 4:30.  I gave Greg and Laurel big hugs and told them that this was a Thanksgiving trip.  The kids were home from school and Laurel had round steak in the oven for supper!

"I'm okay" was a comment that I heard quite often over the weekend.  She didn't sleep much the first night, and neither did Greg!  She spent the night on the couch in the living-room, remote in hand to keep track of events in Sochi, especially the snowboarding event that Mark McMorris was competing in.  Mark's dad, Don, was the matchmaker for Laurel and Greg and toasted them at their wedding.  Now he and his wife were watching their 20 year old son competing for an olympic medal just two weeks after he broke a rib in a fall at the X games!  But Mark thrives on doing his best in competition and a broken rib was not going to keep him from his dream.  He made it to the finals, fell on landing one of his jumps in his first run so all depended on the second time over the course.  Mark came through and was thrilled to be awarded the first 2014 medal for Canada, a bronze in slope style snowboarding.  This is the first year that this event has been an Olympic sport.

On Saturday afternoon Greg took Ashley to a birthday party and the guys went to the rink for Eric's hockey game versus an Estevan team.  The Milestone Atom Flyers kept up their perfect league record with a win.  Greg came home with a batch of delicious chili, homemade bread and banana bread, a thoughtful gift from the mother of the birthday girl.

On Sunday Ashley took part in a Skating Fun Festival.  Each participant was awarded a medal but Ashley was more excited about the helium balloon that each one also got. It was tied to a candy bag with a long ribbon.  She and several friends played with them, and emptied the candy bags, for at least two hours while Eric's hockey team played Crosby and won again.

It's now Tuesday morning and I am off to quilting at Trinity with our monthly Bible study at 1:30.  A verse on the ecard from Todd, Kristy and Nora is so appropriate after the events of the weekend: "The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy."  (Ps.126:3)

I will do another post when I get home as I had a birthday yesterday and today is the fourth anniversary of my blog - lots of things to celebrate!  See you later.
