My last blog had enough in it for two or three blogs with a birthday, two baptisms and Thanksgiving Day all happening on one weekend. So what am I going to write about today?
Awhile back I mentioned that I've been compiling a list of ten books that I would take with me to a deserted island, (or perhaps to a senior's home would be more appropriate now!) Maybe today is a good day to bring out that list, or try to remember it.
1. A copy of the Bible, perhaps two of them in different editions. One would definitely be the King James version that I received from Mom and Dad for Christmas in 1954. It's a red letter edition and the one that I used for two years of confirmation classes with Pastor Pegelow. We had memory verses to learn every week and they are all underlined.
2. A book of hymns, the "Lutheran Book of Worship", would be my first choice. Not only does it contain over 500 hymns, but it also can be used as a devotional book with suggested readings for each day, a list of songs to go with each week in the year as well as prayers and creeds. I remember Pastor Allan Grundahl showing us in a session at Midale Bible Camp how he used this book in his devotions, choosing a hymn to sing from the section that fits in with the season of the church year.
3. "Celebration of Discipline," the path to spiritual growth. Maturity is something we never fully attain so I want to keep studying this book by Richard J. Foster.
4. "The Christians Secret of a Happy Life" by Hannah Whitall Smith, a Quaker. Hannah's book was first printed in 1870 and is just as relevant today as it was back then. The publishers describe it as "a rock of a book."
5. Bunyan's "Pilgrims Progress" is a book that I have only read in parts so I would like to study this classic.
6. "The Secret Garden" by France Hodgson Burnett was the first novel that I was introduced to, thanks to Miss Flora Davidson, my grades one to three teacher. She read to us every afternoon and I was spellbound by this book. I have two editions of the movie but the book is still the best. It was first published in 1911.
7. A book of poetry, "Poems Worth Knowing". Howard and I both used this text book in high school. My copy was printed in 1941 so is a little older than I am! Howard loved these old poems too.
8. Another novel, my current favorite, "A Walk to Remember" by Nicholas Sparks. It's an unlikely love story of a 17 year old guy and the daughter of a Baptist pastor. The story takes place in the late 50's when I was also a teenager and that might be part of its appeal for me. Maybe you've seen the movie.
9. A cookbook. Not that I'd be doing any cooking, but I'd like to have one with all my favourite recipes over the years. My current one needs updating so I'm going to work on that.
10. I guess this last one isn't really a book but it gives you access to books, magazines, newspapers. I'd like to take a Kindle with me. Abbey got one for her birthday and it seems very useful. It might not be much good on a desert island but I think it would work just fine at a senior's home. (I might have to get the grandchildren to help me figure out how to order material though and hope that my credit card still works!)
| A few of my "List of Ten" |
Well, that's my list for today. It will likely keep changing but these are my choices now. When the day comes to pack up and leave my cosy house on the prairie, I'm sure I'll have trouble limiting my books to ten! I suppose if I still know how to use a computer, I wouldn't need any books with me! But I won't count on it so better keep this list handy so I can find it when I start packing! ( I hope that day is quite a ways down the road. In the meantime, I'll keep reading....... and blogging! Now I'd like to see your list. Email me at mrshojo21@hotmail.com or give me a phone call at 306-923-4427. You can even text me at 306-421-6490! (Thanks Karen, for your encouraging phone call as I was finishing up this post.)
I read a cute statement the other day that suits me "A book lover never goes to bed alone."
