| Sunset at Clear Lake, Manitoba Sunday, August 4 |
Ashley made this long weekend special for me. We had a fun time together - watching movies, playing Connect Four, stitching sewing cards, reading bedtime stories (often the same one - Eric Carle's "10 Little Rubber Ducks") picking apples, playing with the three little kittens and so on. In between, I was busy canning peaches and cooking applesauce. That pretty well kept us close to home. Maybe I won't be so busy the next time she comes.
Today we went to morning worship at Trinity. Ashley was planning to entertain us over lunch in the auditorium with her dancing. She changed into her costume but then became shy and dancing was no longer on her agenda. She was enthused about sharing her collections of shells and feathers so had fun doing that. Then we were off to Weyburn to meet Laurel's. They were in Weyburn for Eric's hockey school. We stopped at the rink to pick up Laurel and Dawson, then dropped Dawson off at the swimming pool. Weyburn was celebrating 100 years as a city so there was even free swimming and a free beach ball for swimmers today! Laurel, Ashley and I went to visit Vivian Vinge. She is recovering from a broken leg and is doing well, using just one cane in the house now and back to driving her Escape. We admired her beautiful flowers, this one just beside her front door.
Ashley did a couple dances for Vivian, then was happy to colour in some colouring books and play with dolls that Vivian has knit matching dresses and hats. Here's a picture of Ashley with Vivian and one of her many well dressed dolls. Vivian sent her home with a lovely handknit sweater that will be perfect for this new school girl this fall. I'll share a picture when Laurel gets one of Ashley trying it on.
Todd and Kristy have been enjoying their holiday time. One day they went on a day trip and did some hiking while Nora spent time with her Norsk "Grandma Gunn" Another day Gunn accompanied them to the farm where her mother grew up and where Gunn's brother now lives. Todd was going to go fishing with him but the rain changed those plans. They have been enjoying very warm weather there lately, plus 28ºC the other day, warmer than SK!
On my way back to the farm today, I experienced another first - I went to the Torquay Cafe for supper by myself! I've eaten out in Estevan a few times alone so I'm kind of getting used to it. Ashley is sympathetic to Grandma's living alone. She told me a couple times "It's too bad you don't have a husband." My fortune cookie this evening wasn't as promising as the last ones. It read "Linger over dinner discussions this week for needed advice." Guess I'll have to invite company for dinner so we can linger and I can get some advice. Jeff is in Ontario for two weeks so I can't get advice from him this week!
Monday might be a holiday for many but I have a "To Do" list for the day. Making some peach pies for the freezer is at the top of the list. My Escape needs a wash. The garden needs watering. Some windows need washing. That's enough for a Monday so I'll stop the list there and hopefully get through those five tomorrow.
Clare's and Kirk's are camping this week at Clear Lake, Manitoba. There were reports of mosquitoes and flies being bad there so hope the reports weren't as bad as it sounded. We've been blessed so far this summer with very few bugs. Not enough of some species when it comes to pollinating blossoms. A neighbour noted that you don't even see sweet clover blooming in the ditches. I was wanting a picture for the top of my post when I got a lovely sunset picture from Kirk. Perfect!!
Well, this is all for tonight. I'll be back mid week. On Wednesday our accordion group will be playing at 1:30 at Mainprize Manor in Midale.
