Somehow I have better luck with this computer in the mornings. I gave up trying to update last night but everything is good to go this morning, including me!
I picked Howard up at the centre about 9:30 and we were off to the bus depot at the Shell service station. We applied for STC "gold cards" which enable seniors 65 and over to 30% off bus fares, That way the round trip to Regina for both of us was $60. That doesn't even fill up the gas tank these days. It was such a treat to just sit back and leave the driving to STC. The roads were good and the bus made no stops on the way.
Howard's cousin, Lorna Pederson, met us at the bus depot and we were off to Bonanza for a buffet lunch. Then it was time for Howard's first appointment at 1:30 with Dr. Mervitz, an eye specialist. Howard has the beginning of cataracts in both eyes, but the Dr. said it could be a long time before they need attention. He also checks for signs of glaucoma as there is a history of that in the Bergum family. Howard's eyesight is good with his present glasses. He will see the Dr. again for a six month checkup.
We walked across the street to the Pasqua Hospital where he saw a neurologist, Dr. Veloso. He had received info from Dr. Suberu about Howard's latest brain scan, but he saw nothing disturbing in it. He asked Howard to do several tasks as a check on his memory. The most challenging for him were the math questions. He knew the day of the week, the season, the year, had a bit of trouble with the month, knew the name of the hospital and the number of the floor we were on. remembered just two of the three items that he was told to list after a few minutes. Howard has always been a people person so he could have answered countless questions correctly on that topic! He has another appointment on July 21st, so the weather should be a lot different for our next trip to Regina! It was COLD yesterday, but at least the sun was shining and that makes such a difference.
We joined Lorna at Robin's Donuts right at the Pasqua and had a good visit there. Soon it was time to head back to the bus depot. The bus left right on time at 5:30. Wascana Parkway was a beautiful drive with the snow laden evergreens. There were no stops and we were back at the Shell staion right on time at 7:00. I was glad that the pickup started right away after sitting out in the cold all day. We drove across the street and treated ourselves to the Mama Burger special at A & W while the pickup warmed up in the parking lot. Then we were off to return Howard to the mental health centre at Tatagwa View. He will be discharged tomorrow after a "discharge meeting" at ten am. I took a couple bags of his things home with me so there won't be so much to take tomorrow morning.
When I got home, I went next door and joined Jodi and Abbey for a good cup of hot tea. They are both fighting coughs and colds so may be staying home from school today. Clare's truck was home from their day trip to Brandon when I was up at 2:00 am so I'm sure they are all sleeping in this morning.
Well, that's about all for this update. Sounds like more snow in the forecast, but also a chance for some milder temperatures this weekend!
