Sunday evening

Two "bag ladies" at the Legislature

I had my blog all ready to post, just meant to move a picture to the top of the page.  Instead, my blog disappeared and it's too late to do it over tonight.  I'll work on it on Monday morning, in case you are wondering what happened to my usual Sunday posting.  I will add the picture I was attempting to move so you'll have something to look at anyway!

Well, Monday is past and now it's Tuesday morning so I better get with it and finish up this so called Sunday evening post!  Storm chasers are expecting some turbulent weather in SK to day so I don't think I'll be going anywhere very far!  I'll concentrate on getting some mail ready for tomorrow.

On Wednesday our two circles from Trinity are visiting at St. Joseph's Special Care Home at 3:30 in the afternoon.  We'll do a short program featuring some songs by our Torquay Grannies and spend some time visiting with the residents there.  Then we'll go to Houston Pizza for supper.  Wednesday is their senior night special and that includes most of our group!  At 7 we'll go to Hillview Manor, do much the same program there, except that we'll have a singsong with the residents and also bring an evening lunch to share with them.  We do these visits twice a year so that enables us to visit four care homes.

Yesterday I made a trip to Ambrose for the mail.  I'm between passports so I wasn't sure how it would go.  My current passport is stamped VOID but I do have the receipt for my new one and I guess that's good enough until the new one actually arrives in the next two weeks.

In the afternoon I got the lawnmower out and cut grass.  The lawn is starting to show that it's needing some moisture.  The last couple years the lawn has never had a sprinkler on it but things might be different this year.

Now, back to last week.  I enjoyed a refreshing two days at Laurel and Greg's.  It was good to get away, and then it's also good to get back home again!  Laurel, Ashley and I went to Regina on Friday so I could visit the passport office and get that taken care of.  I was impressed with the staff there, very helpful and considerate.  I had filled out most of the two page form and my picture passed inspection so I was done in fifteen minutes.  It was a different feeling to have to write "widow" under marital status.

We left the office on Albert St. and drove to the Legislative building.  It was fun to do something like that instead of heading for a mall.  We visited the gift shop and I bought a few things to take along to Norway.  Ashley was so happy to get a gift bag with a tyrannosaurus rex on it.  That's the bag that she is holding in the picture above.  Then she wanted to go to "the park".  Of course her idea of a park is one with play structures.  Laurel found our way to "Candyland Park" and it was just what Ashley wanted.  Her favourite was the Canada goose slide so here's a picture of that and of the big stepping stones that she also enjoyed.  A couple ladies asked Laurel where she got the cute green sundress that Ashley was wearing.  Ashley loves to wear dresses and this is her favourite one, bought in California by her Auntie Danita.

A BIG Canada goose!

Laurel had a lunchbag of snacks along so we had a little picnic on a blanket on the grass before we headed back to the farm.  It was such a perfect day - sunny and warm, with no wind or mosquitoes!  It was also a perfect day for spraying fields so Greg put in a very long day at that job.

It's hard to believe that the end of June is here already.  School ends for most of the kids tomorrow, with teachers finishing up on Friday.  Then families will be heading out for summer holidays.  And three weeks from tomorrow Sandra and I will be heading for Norway!  Kristy has been arranging schedules for our time in Norway so it's great to leave all that in her capable hands.  We will fly to Oslo from Copenhagen, Toronto and Regina and spend a few days with members of the Eika family.  The Eikas have a Torquay connection as years ago the Eika family had a general store in town.  They moved back to Norway but  still keep in touch with friends made when they lived in Torquay.  We are blessed to be able to spend some time with them and have even been invited to an Eika cousin reunion!  We met one of these cousins when we celebrated Todd's birthday last year.  We served a pancake breakfast after the 9:00 Sunday service at Trinity on April 15.  We were just having birthday cake and coffee when two couples from Norway joined us.  They had come up from their travels in North Dakota and were hoping to attend church service at 11:00 at Trinity.  What were the chances of having three couples from Norway meeting at the church that morning, especially when all had driven through a bridge south of town that was CLOSED due to flooding!  One of these couples were Eikas, who were very interested in finding out where the store and their family's house had been located.  None of us at the service was old enough to remember those days but we referred them to 94 year old Aunt Viola Halvorson in Estevan.  They visited her in the afternoon and did lots of reminiscing.  And soon Sandra and I will be connecting with this family in Norway!  We will not just be "tourists" but will have a chance to be in a Norwegian home and even partake in a family reunion.  I wonder if they'll have lefse and flatbread!  We'll tell you all about it next month.

Well, I've rambled on long enough so I better sign off and go for a morning walk before the heat hits.  I also need to go up to Salem with the watering cans to be sure the plants can survive this hottest day of the year.  Have a good rest of the week.  I'll be back after the Canada Day celebrations at Oungre Park on Sunday.  Laurel and Ashley will join me for the Jamboree that afternoon.  See you later!

  1. It was a wonderful day in Regina. So interesting about the Eika family you'll visit in Norway and their Torquay connection.
