UPDATE

February 14, 2015
at the Scheske home in Regina

Our wedding day with dear friends and witnesses,
Marilyn and Ray Scheske
It's over a week since my last posting so I need to spend some time in a "catchup" post.

I will start with today.  After worship service and coffee fellowship we headed for Estevan.  Eric was playing in his last league game of the season at 1:30.  While he was getting ready for the game we went to Boston Pizza and had lunch with Laurel and Ashley.  Then it was back to the rink to watch the game.  It got off to a good start with Eric scoring the first goal!  It ended in a 2-2 tie so I commended Eric for scoring half the goals for his team!  He wasn't feeling well yesterday and wasn't in top shape today but played the best he could though not a very peppy player.

On Monday night Dawson plays in Estevan at 8:00 with Prairie Storm in a league play off game.  I don't think we'll be there to cheer them on just having been there today.  We old folks prefer day games to night ones!

Tomorrow Mid City is coming out to put in a new water heater as ours sprung a leak yesterday.  Fortunately the water was confined to the furnace room and ran into the sump pump draining area so no soaked carpets or other damage.

The Tournament of Hearts started yesterday so Alan will be keeping track of those curling games this week.  The team that comes out the winner after the round robin and playoffs will represent Canada in the Women's World Curling event in Swift Current next month.  The winner will also have a berth at the Olympic trials to represent Canada at the 2018 winter Olympics.

Abbey and her curling team from Weyburn took part in a 15 and under bonspiel in Regina last weekend.  They did very well, winning all their games and scoring a 7 ender in the fifth and final game! (Each team throws 8 rocks in each end so they scored with 7 out of the 8 rocks.http://www.discoverweyburn.com/local-sports/32718-weyburn-curlers-win-regina-spiel  Here's a link to the article about their win. Sandra and Merle are enjoying a holiday visiting Merle's Uncle Earle Sanford and his family in Kansas City.  They flew from Regina on Tuesday and will be back on Wednesday.  It has been fifteen years since they were there.  You deserve a good vacation so this is a start!

Now, back to Yuma.  One of our favourite places to visit was to Martha's Garden, a date farm.  We took a guided tour and were amazed to learn how labour intensive date farming is.  Many of the workers come from Mexico by bus each day.  They are glad to work in AZ as the same job in Mexico starts at $2 and hour and in AZ they start at $9 at the farm we visited.  The average yearly rainfall in the Yuma area is 3 inches and date trees need 100 inches a year.  Irrigation is a necessity!  That farm depends on wells.  Each tree has its own watering hose.

There are many kinds of dates but the dates in Martha's Gardens were all Medjool, a high quality date.  Dates can be frozen, thawed, frozen, thawed with no change to their texture.  Dates are sorted and sold according to their size, colour and appearance.  In that area you can even buy date milkshakes!

Another interesting visit was to the sand dunes just inside California.  We headed out one Sunday afternoon but had to turn back that day due to a sand storm with the high winds-like a blizzard of sand instead of snow!

Sand as far as you can see

First roads in the sand were made from wood planks
Drifts of sand piled up by the winds
On weekends and holidays  ATV's, dune buggies etc are out in the sand by the hundreds as it's a great place to "play".

I will close this posting with a note about our anniversary.  We didn't have our picture taken but we look much the same as we did on our wedding day, Feb. 14, 2015.  I wore my red and black to church that morning and we served heart shaped cookies with date filling for coffee fellowship, along with Medjool dates and Hershey "kisses".  After being away for two weeks we enjoyed being at home for Valentines Day and our first anniversary.  We don't exchange gifts, just cards on special occasions, as we enjoy trips together as our gifts.
Alan has popcorn made so I'm going to join him for a treat and watch the end of tonight's curling games.  Bye for now!
