SPORTS REPORT!

I wrote about Abbey's success in mixed double curling in my last post.  This time I'll tell you about their success as a girl's High School team.  Team Haupstein competed in two play downs leading up to Provincial High School Championships in Nipawin on March 5-7.  We took in a district competition in Estevan which they won and then played in Regionals in Yorkton. A win there sent them on to Nipawin last weekend where they won the provincial trophy for Under 18 Girls.  Here's Abbey with her proud Dad and the trophy.

This weekend the girls curled at Under 18 play downs at the Callie Club in Regina, March 14 - 17.  The winning team will be off to Nationals in Sherwood Park, AB from April 2 to 7.  And that will be Team Haupstein who won their final game on Sunday afternooon and were awarded a trophy for U 18 Women!  They were also awarded green jackets as they will be representing our province at the nationals next month.  Here they are with their new jackets.  Sunday was St. Patricks Day so those green jackets will be a special reminder of their March 17 championship!

Congratulations to girls and a big thank you to coaches and parents for all the support these girls have had along the way.  They also had many sponsors who helped the team financially so thanks to these businesses named on their team jackets.

We drove up to Regina on Friday, stayed overnight at Days Inn and saw them play four games.  The other games we could watch on Facebook live, thanks to moms who shared their phones.  It was great to keep up with the games while sitting at the computer!  I think it was better not to have Alan at those final games!  He gets pretty worked up when he doesn't agree with the strategy they are using!!  But it all worked out in the end and the girls are champions once again.

Abbey has set a record this season as she has now won three provincial championships - in Mixed Doubles, High School Ladies and now U 18 Ladies.  WOW!  Besides this, she is taking grade 12 at the Weyburn Comprehensive School and works part time at a Day Care.  Congratulations to a very capable girl and her parents, Jodi and Clare, who have supported her all the way.  Clare has also assisted in coaching.

When the games in Regina were over, Abbey was presented with a very special gift from her Uncle Joey and Jan Kot - the green curling jacket that her Grandma Gaby Kot wore when she represented SK in Winnipeg at the "Lassies" which was what the Scotties was called back in 1976.  It fits Abbey perfectly!

Hockey has ended for the season for grandsons Dawson and Eric Diekrager.  Dawson played with a AAA Team, Moose Jaw Generals.  He moved to Moose Jaw in September and attended Vanier Collegiate taking grade twelve classes.  It was a very good experience for him being billeted with "parents" Kevin and Shauna. Curfew of 10 pm was a new experience, especially on weekends but he survived.  He is back home and going to school again in Milestone as the Generals did not make the playoffs.  (He makes trips back to Moose Jaw to visit a special girl1)

Eric played AA hockey with Prairie Storm based in Pilot Butte.  It is just a half hour drive from the Diekrager farm if you go on local roads so worked out well. They lost out by one goal to a Regina team in the fifth game in a best of 5 game series so lost out playing undefeated Swift Current in the final series.

Ashley is very busy with dance lessons leading up to several competitions coming up.  The first one is on Saturday, March 16 in Avonlea.  She is also taking part in a drama at Milestone School so has extra practices for that.  She turned 11 on March 2.  We stayed overnight there and helped her celebrate. She didn't want a party with friends, but wanted family.  Grandma Gaylene and cousin Lee Freitag also came that day so she got her wish.

Kirk's family enjoyed the winter school break in February at a resort in Mexico.  All went well.  One highlight was whale watching!

The Lampman girsl, Lindsay and Jamie enjoyed curling too. Lindsay was part of a mixed team of grade seven students that went to High School Regionals in Yorkton.  Jamie also played on a mixed team in Districts at Lampman.

At this spiel Jamie came close to winning $1500 in a "Draw to the button".  She was the youngest to enter and came the closest - just 12" away.  The money is held over so she'll try again for a bigger prize next year!

Carter is enjoying an agricultural class at Lampman High School with practical experience at Nelson Motors John Deere in Estevan.  He will have put in 50 hours of training and work experience this week for his class credit.  He played hockey in a Rec league.

It has taken me awhile but this is as much as I'll add to this blog post.  I haven't mentioned Todd's family so that will be first on the list for next post.  Kristy spent two weeks in Sri Lanka so I'll share some of her experiences there.  She wasn't well when she got home, high fever and chills so keep their family in your prayers as Elly Clara stayed home today too not feeling well.  On Sunday Kristy's Dad, Dan Ledene of Brooks, AB had a heart attack and is in Calgary Hospital.  He had a stent put in on Monday as he had almost a total blockage in one artery and partial in others.  It's hard for Todd and Kristy to be so far away when things like this happen.

I will say good-night for now and will write again in the spring!!
