FAMILY DAY

Yes, it's Family Day in Saskatchewan today but my family is no where to be seen.  They have left the country!  It's also school break this week so that explains the situation.

Alan and I went on a little tour of southern SK this past week.  We left Torquay on Tuesday afternoon, skipping out on part of the quilting session at Trinity.  After all, it was our second anniversary so I had a good reason to leave early.  We drove to Regina, checked in to a hotel and made our way over to "our chapel" as Alan referred to Marilyn and Ray Scheske's home.  That's where we were married on Feb. 14, 2015 so it was fun to be there again.  We had our picture taken beside the fireplace, as we did two years ago.

Steak supper for Alan!

We were also celebrating two birthdays - Marilyn's on Feb. 16 and mine on Feb. 10.  Combining our ages we are as old as Canada!

This was my birthday cake on the tenth - a maple walnut chiffon.  It was on the same plate as I had my first birthday cake on in the picture with my Grandma Erickson.  The plate was one of their wedding gifts in 1904.  The 75 mug is from Saskatchewan's 75th in 1980.  The other special mug was designed by Lindsay and Jamie for Grandma.

Back to our travels, we left Regina on Wed. morning and headed to Moose Jaw where we met Laurel at the Yvette Moore Gallery. After lunch we went to the Mae Wilson Theatre for "Sisters of Swing", the story and music of the Andrew Sisters.  Thanks Laurel for this musical treat.

It was such a lovely day with temperatures in the lower teens on our way to Gull Lake. Record breaking! We enjoyed an overnight visit and morning brunch with Alan's sister Donna and Cam Lock.

On Thursday morning we drove down to Frontier,  hometown for both of us.  We enjoyed visiting friends at the Frontier Rec Centre before heading to the Sanford farm.  On the way we stopped at the Municipal Cemetery where Alan's parents, Walt and Lola Lutz are laid to rest as well as Alan's cousin, Edna Thoring and our great nephew, Blaine Sanford.

We enjoyed supper and visiting with Sandra and Merle that evening.  On Friday afternoon Sandra and I visited the quilt shop in town.  It's closing the end of April so most items (not fabric) were 20% off.  That store will be missed, not only for it's fabric but for the variety of gift items they keep there as well.

It was "Pie Friday" at the Rec Centre, a tradition that was suggested by Edith Dumontel several years ago.  It has raised several thousand dollars since volunteers started serving pie and coffee for $5 each Friday afternoon.  It's a good day to come to town and visit. There were 41 people out for pie that afternoon and we knew most of them!

Around five o'clock the bus from Milestone drove up with the Bantam hockey team who were playing Frontier Flyers at 7:00.  Alan and Judy treated us to pizza and soon it was game time with grandson Eric Diekrager playing with the Milestone Flyers.

Just before the game our niece Tanya (Erickson) Howell and her daughters Macey and Madison joined us.  Then niece Mandy (Sanford) Peakman, Drew and Ty surprised us all by showing up from Lacombe, AB.  Eric had lots of family there to cheer him on.   The game was a close one with Milestone ahead until the last minutes of the game when they had too many penalties and Frontier won by two points.  The next game in the total point series will be in Milestone this Friday the 24 at 7:00.  We plan to take that in too.

We headed home after brunch on Saturday morning.  It was still above zero with bare ground around Frontier.  We drove into our yard shortly after six o'clock.  The snow banks had settled quite a bit.  It's quiet at the oil well sites as it's too muddy to get into them with the big trucks.
Not much snow left at the Sanford farm
It was a good five day trip with a chance to visit with many family members and friends.  It's neat that Alan and I have the same hometown and know most of "the older folks" as that includes us too!  It's fun to be there for special occasions as we get to visit with so many more people then.  There was a big crowd at the hockey game.  The fifty/fifty jackpot was over $300 and was won by a local person.

Tomorrow is quilting day so I better figure out what to bring for potluck lunch.  We may head to Estevan in the afternoon.  I need to renew my driver's license before month end and Alan has plans to see the Bruins play Melville tomorrow night.

Have a great holiday week those of you with school children!
